First Time? - Starting to Employ Staff

Starting to employ people
When starting your business, you may well only be working with a small number of other people. If your business is a success and you want to expand, you may well look to take on employees. Even if you’ve been running a business for a while, now might be the time you’re looking at taking someone on.
Consider what employment option best suits your needs and remember that your employees are a valuable investment, so you want to make sure you get it right. Are you looking for someone to fill a specific skill gap or just to cope with extra workload? Is this additional workload temporary and what affect will taking on someone new have?

Options
Permanent full-time or part-time staff tend to have an open ended contract with you and you have certain obligations to them. Temporary staff recruited through an agency can be an excellent choice to cover a temporary need, but you still have some obligations to the person concerned.
Freelancers, consultants or contractors are generally self-employed, so there are few employer obligations.

Recruiting
There are many ways to advertise your vacancy. Some of the most popular are:
Online – Social Media – referrals – people you know – a specialist recruiter in your industry

Interviewing
To avoid poor results from interviewing, you need to be prepared, plan and prepare.

What are you looking for?
What criteria are you going to assess candidates against?

There are two main ways to structure an interview; formal and casual. A formal interview tends to use structured questions to explore the criteria you’re assessing against.

Casual interviews are more of an informal discussion and ‘getting to know you’ session.

You might also want to set a practical task to assess a specific skill and remember to interview in a quiet place where you won’t face constant interruptions. Give the candidate the chance to ask questions about the job and the company and make sure you let them know when you’ll be in touch with a decision.

Best of Luck

Re: First Time? - Starting to Employ Staff

Hi Nikki,

As someone who is at the coal face of jobs and hiring maybe you can post an outline of what sort of money different roles currently attract and what people expect for the money ? I am sure it would be interesting to employers and employees alike ?

What does a business developement manager get these days and what sort of new business are they expected to generate ? What does a property officer get in comparison to a property manager or a senior property manager ??

... or not ..

Thanks Ken

Thanks Ken.

My thoughts re advising on salaries is a difficult one to give you the exact figures. What I can mention is positions we have recently placed for Real Estate companies here in Queensland and the salary offer that has been offered and accepted by an ICG Candidate.

Recently we placed a BDM role for a Property Management division was accepted at $50k plus bonus' for new lets allowances such as car and phone.

A Senior Property Manager we placed recently in the last two months was at $55k plus bonus and allowances.

A Property Manager assistant was placed and accepted $35 k.

A BDM role we placed with no experience accepted $38k, no bonus' initially however these will be put in place in the next few months.

We have many roles we place in the industry, I have given you an example of what candidates have accepted recently and we feel these are at the market rate and above.

Feel free to check out our www.realetstatejobssearch.com
for up to date recruitment news in the Real Estate Industry.
